Air and water source heat pumps

These systems use similar principles to ground source heat pumps to extract heat from air or water instead of the ground.

Air source heat pumps can be fitted outside a house or in the roof space and generally perform better at slightly warmer air temperatures. Water source heat pumps can be used to provide heating in homes near to rivers, streams and lakes.

The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is expected to be launched in April 2011. It is designed to provide financial support to encourage the uptake of renewable and low carbon heat technologies like heat pumps.

From a users prospective, when compared to traditional means of domestic heating, installing technology like air source heat pumps can reduce your Co2 emissions by up to 50% and offers a 30% saving on running costs.
